Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Doesn’t Feature A Mode That Turns Ray Tracing Off

September 15, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Get ready for a visually appealing experience.

The upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 video game has many fans eager to dive into it. We’re set to receive this new game from the folks over at Insomniac Games next month. New York City looks impressive if you’ve been following this game’s marketing materials. Fortunately, if you enjoy visuals and ray tracing, you’re in luck. It looks like the development team managed to get this game to a point where there is no need to turn off ray tracing. Today, we’re finding out that ray tracing is enabled by default and won’t be switched off from a game mode.

Some video game titles that have launched over the past few years feature a few mode options. Essentially, players could pick between a performance mode that dials back some of the visual features to provide a smoother FPS experience. Meanwhile, if you enjoy visuals, there is a quality mode that offers better visuals through something like ray tracing while taking a hit to the FPS performance. However, don’t expect a mode in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that won’t feature a ray tracing setting disabled. This comes from a recent interview between IGN and the director of core technology at Insomniac Games, Mike Fitzgerald.

According to Mike, the developers had managed to deliver ray tracing as the baseline performance mode. So everyone will get to experience the picture and visuals the developers had planned for the game.

There’s no mode of this game that has the ray tracing turned off, no need for it. We’ve really figured out how to deliver what we feel like is the right Spider-Man picture and visuals and we want to make sure every player is seeing that.

Meanwhile, we did get some insight into what FPS players could set for the game. Thanks to a report from Tech Raptor, we’re discovering that Insomniac Games director of community and marketing, James Stevenson, spoke up on the X social media platform. James noted that players would be able to pick either 30, 40, or 60 FPS for the game to run. So we’ll get to see just how much the PlayStation 5 might handle since this is another title developed and optimized for the console. We even know that the lead architect for the PlayStation 5 was a producer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

News has slowly been released online today for the game as media outlets and content creators were given a chance to try the installment out. For instance, we learned that the narrative in this upcoming game doesn’t feature Gwen Stacy. But perhaps we’ll see the character appear in the game as players web-swing around New York City in search of clues or Easter Eggs. For now, we will have to wait a bit longer for the game to arrive, as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is not set to launch until October 20, 2023, for the PlayStation 5.
