Thanks to our friends at Digital Trends, we have the latest details on Baldur’s Gate 3’s upcoming launch on PlayStation 5.
So, first off, the PlayStation 5 version releases on September 6, 2023. There will be some gamers who bought the Digital Deluxe Edition, and will be able to start playing on September 3, 2023.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s file size on PlayStation 5 has not yet been revealed, and no number has also come up in leaks or rumors. What is likely is that the game could take less hard drive space on PlayStation 5 than on PC. That’s because of Sony’s proprietary PlayStation 5 technology, that allows players to compress their games on the console, and still be able to play them.
The preload will be available as soon as September 1, 2023. So, we may have to wait a little bit longer to find out how much space the game will actually occupy on your oversized console.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also being developed for Xbox Series X|S. Larian Studios has acquired help from within Xbox themselves to help them finish up work on the port, but have yet to give a release date or release window.
Whichever platform you choose to play it on, Baldur’s Gate 3 seems to be a serious contender for Game of the Year. In a year that’s already packed with known commodities such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4, and Final Fantasy 16, Baldur’s Gate III has emerged as, perhaps also a sequel, but one from a long dormant IP, and an unproven developer. In the same way that the past few years has seen FromSoftware’s stock rise to the point that they are now considered by many fans as one of the major Japanese game studios, this could be the start of Larian Studios’ rise as a major AAA, not just an emerging independent studio but one that grows to the point that it’s become the next Rockstar Games or Blizzard.
After all, those companies also made their name by emerging seemingly out of nowhere and releasing instant classics that endure through the years. Id had Doom, Blizzard had Warcraft, Rockstar had Grand Theft Auto III, and we might see that moment happen again for Larian Studios.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is also impressive for seemingly bringing back the Western developed turn-based RPG. But on this count, Larian is riding a wave multiple developers, not only them, have built upon. And so, it could be the start of something new for that genre as well.
