Larian Studios has officially shared word about the first official patch incoming for Baldur’s Gate 3.
The studio’s founder and CEO Swen Vincke tweeted this out a few hours ago:
“We’re all very enthused by your feedback. It’s very rewarding. Our focus now is fixing any issues you report, but we are listening to suggestions. Current roadmap: a) Hotfix 4, b) Patch 1 (+1000 fixes and tweaks), c) Patch 2. The latter will already incorporate some requests.”
As you see, Swen did not put dates on that roadmap, so we don’t know how long before they get that first patch out. But, this announcement is to make it clear how big an update that patch will be. In fact, that might be taken as a warning, given how Baldur’s Gate 3 overloaded Steam’s servers at launch. That just might happen again with this patch if everyone tries to update at the same time.
It’s certainly the kind of problem you want to have. In any case, don’t be surprised if the game feels completely different afterwards.
In fact, we already know about one very big change incoming, that won’t directly affect gameplay or performance, but really shows us how much integrity Larian Studios has.
That is Larian’s pledge to add in the proper credits to the Spanish translators of Baldur’s Gate 3. Around a week ago, a whistleblower brought to light that Altagram, the company that was in charge of the Spanish translation of the game, did not include the names of many of the translators who worked on it.
Larian immediately put the blame on Altagram and revealed that they demanded the names of the uncredited translators from the company. While they initially intended to include these credits in their next hotfix, it will now be part of that big upcoming patch 1.
An interesting angle in regards to this patch is the fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 spent three years under Steam Early Access. That means that Larian Studios already received three years’ worth of feedback while they had been working on its development. That earlier feedback came from their most hardcore fans, and perhaps also some very dedicated Dungeons and Dragons / Forbidden Realms / Baldur’s Gate fans.
That feedback helped Larian polish the game to its high quality, but now things will be quite different. The upcoming patches will be to cater to the new and very broad player base that Baldur’s Gate 3 has. It will be interesting to see how the game evolves moving forward from here.
