The Last Of Us Movie Has Been In Development Limbo For 18 Months

April 5, 2016 by Stephen Daly

And it doesn’t look like the Uncharted movie will meet its schedule either.

Production on the movie adaptations of both Uncharted and The Last of Us appears to have stalled, Uncharted 4 game director Neil Druckmann has revealed in an IGN interview.

Sony has previously scheduled Uncharted movie for June 30th, 2017 but Druckmann says the script is not yet ready.

“Every once in a while they’ll come in and they’ll present to us: here’s the script, here’s what we’re thinking. We’ll tell them what we think works, what we think doesn’t work,” Druckman said. “That’s where we’re at. Last I heard is they got a new screenwriter, but we haven’t seen anything in a while.”

Druckmann added that Naughty Dog wants the movie makers to keep the core relationships between Nate, Elena, and Sully.

“Our approach is just to steer them back to those relationships,” he continued. “The most important part to get right is Nathan Drake, Nathan Drake’s relationship with Elena and Nathan Drake’s relationship with Sullivan. If you don’t get that right, I don’t think the film’s going to work. If you get that core right, there’s a chance it could work.”

For a while it looked like The Last of Us movie was seeing promising progress but that’s no longer the case, according to Druckmann. “I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do,” he said. “There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”

Druckmann added that Naughty Dog is only “somewhat involved” in making The Last of Us movie.

Naughty Dog’s next game, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, launches on May 10th on PlayStation 4.
