The Cycle: Frontier Is Being Killed Off This September

June 28, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Developers are shutting the servers down.

No one wants to see their favorite server-based games get shut down. It’s something that does happen from time to time, and there’s a variety of reasons for it. But today, we’re finding out that The Cycle: Frontier is going to be sunsetting this September. The news came today on the official Steam page for the game, where the developers explained why they came to the conclusion of powering down the game. Overall, it’s mainly due to the lack of interest lately from the community of players.

If you haven’t been keeping tabs on this game or need a refresher, The Cycle: Frontier is a free-to-play title. This game offered a PvPvE FPS experience set in the future. Humanity has expanded across the galaxy, and players would step into the role of a prospector. Your goal was to land on a strange alien planet and gather as much loot as possible. However, you had to deal with other hostile players and even the various dangers found on the planet. So if you felt like you risked enough to gather loot, the focus would be reaching a safe extraction from the planet.

The development team from Yager noted on Steam that they were surprised by how quickly the game took off when it launched. It led to expanding servers and resources to ensure the game could meet the number of players trying to log into the title. But that’s where they saw interest starting to drop and even cheaters emerging in the game. While they worked to ensure a fair gameplay experience, the community of players continued to decrease.

Again, their efforts went into adding new content and changes that would potentially appeal to players enough to return, but that failed as well. So the only option that made viable sense was to shut down their servers. We already know that this is a game that won’t be possible to set up an offline gameplay experience for players to host on private servers. As a result, you’ll have to enjoy the game while it lasts until September 27, 2023, when the servers are officially turned off.

Meanwhile, the developers will offer refunds for any purchases made after June 14, 2023. There are adjustments made to the in-game store, such as discounted offers and even a free premium Fortuna Pass. As for the future of the development studio, they have noted the experience learned from this game will help them as they pursue new projects.
