If video games have taught us anything, there are three key things to pay attention to so you can see if a game does well. You need to monitor the development cycle, you need to see how the team hypes up the game, and then, you need to see how everything goes at launch. After all, the first two steps don’t matter as much if you barely sell anything after the title releases. When Street Fighter 6 got closer to launch, gamers were excited, but they’ve been excited before and have been burned by Capcom. However, according to the publisher, things are going well for the title and the series as a whole.
Early this morning, Capcom went to Twitter and tweeted that “over one million players” have joined Street Fighter 6. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean 1 million sold, but at the very least, you can infer that it’s close to that. Moreover, those players came during the launch weekend. So getting that million in just three days is impressive. When you compare that to the last mainline entry of the series, it’s even better, as that one took months to not even reach 1.5 million sold.
But wait, there’s more! Capcom also noted that the franchise’s lifetime sales had crossed fifty million! That’s a very impressive number for a franchise that hasn’t always been consistent or had the best sales numbers compared to other franchises.
There are still some hurdles that the new game needs to cross before it can be called a success in Capcom’s eyes. Reports have stated that Capcom wants the game to sell over 10 million units. That’s a large number and not easy to do if you don’t have a great title. Fortunately for them, most people agree that the game is great.
Its reviews have it in the high 90s on Metacritic, which is leagues above the last entry when it came out years back. Furthermore, outside of some small launch issues, fans have been posting about the game constantly online positively. So that is helping build buzz via word of mouth.
It also helps that Capcom has already teased future content for the title and even dropped a costume pack for the fighters that fans are already eating up for numerous reasons.
There was much risk with this sixth entry, and many bet that Capcom might not have done what it needed to, so the game could be good. But, so far, it seems they were able to defy expectations.
