The Lord of The Rings: Gollum Download Size Revealed For PlayStation

May 22, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

So small on PlayStation 5 you would think that Gollum swallowed it.

We now know the download sizes for The Lord of The Rings: Gollum on PlayStation platforms.

As reported by PSU, The Lord of The Rings: Gollum will be 30.514 GB on PlayStation 4, and a stunningly small 18.664 GB on PlayStation 5. As expected, developers took advantage of Sony’s ability to play games that are compressed on its hard drive.

Preloads for The Lord of The Rings: Gollum will also begin from tomorrow, May 23, 2023.

For those who need a little catching up, The Lord of The Rings: Gollum is a new original game licensed directly with Middle-Earth Enterprises, revolving around The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings character Gollum. It is a stealth action adventure game, as befits our miserable little Gollum, and features an original story set eight years before he appears in The Lord of The Rings books.

The developer is Daedalic Entertainment, a German game studio best known for the Deponia adventure game series, and most recently, the video game adaptation of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth.

Given Daedalic’s lineage, this is a promising project indeed, but The Lord of The Rings: Gollum had been facing serious setbacks in its development, as it had seen repeated delays.

Those setbacks may have come to an end when Daedalic was purchased by Nacon, a French video game company that has its arms wrapped around both video game publishing and making video game controllers and peripherals.

While Nacon have yet to announce they are making a Gollum shaped PlayStation controller, this was still good news for the game. The acquisition would have cleared up any potential funding issues that Daedalic was facing prior to release. It would, of course, also guarantee that The Lord of The Rings: Gollum gets that big money distribution that it should get, as another extension of the Middle-Earth entertainment franchise.

For Middle-Earth fans, it’s a promising development as Daedalic looks to fill out some partly unaccounted for backstory in Gollum’s story.

Gollum is mostly seen as a tragic figure; a former hobbit who somehow got their hands on the one Ring, and fell to its temptation. But this is an opportunity for Daedalic to flesh out Gollum’s character, perhaps to see if there was something noble hiding under that paranoid and dangerous exterior even back then.

The Lord of The Rings: Gollum will be releasing on May 25 2023, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. It will also be released later on the Nintendo Switch.
