One of the beautiful things about the gaming space is that all kinds of franchises can exist as long as they’re made well. Not every game has to be about brutally shooting someone in the face, racing to a finish line, or trying to be the person who catches them all. Sometimes, a lawyer game can rise from the crowd and defy all odds by objecting that they can’t do well. If you can’t take a hint, we’re talking about the Ace Attorney franchise, which has become one of the best Capcom series throughout its life.
Fans adore the series for numerous reasons. First, it’s a special kind of visual novel game where you play both lawyer and detective as you try to solve the case to prove your client innocent. Whether you play Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, Athena Cykes, or certain other characters from the series, you’ll see just how serious and wacky things get.
That’s because the Capcom team did their best to make things feel over-the-top while also being deadly serious. The games don’t hold back at times, and it can get pretty emotional, as fans will tell you.
Over the last few years, Capcom has been doing well by Ace Attorney fans by bringing the original trilogy to the Nintendo Switch and other platforms in a remastered format. They also brought in the two prequel games with different game mechanics to the West for the first time not too long ago. Both games were a success, and in a recent interview, Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto spoke with Famitsu about the company’s upcoming franchise rebirth, and he made a special mention of the Lawyer series:
“As for Ghost Trick, director Shu Takumi also worked on the Ace Attorney series, which is currently doing exceptionally well across the globe.”
A keyword there is “currently,” which means he’s talking in the present tense. That’ll make fans happy that the franchise continues to sell well even though it’s been a while since a new release came out.
To that end, many will likely hope this praise from one of Capcom’s heads will usher in a new mainline entry. Fans will recall that the last one, which came out on the Nintendo 3DS many years ago, ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Many have wondered how that cliffhanger will play out, yet we haven’t gotten word about a new game with Phoenix Wright and his crew.
Hopefully, that’ll change soon, as fans want to be in the courtroom again.
