An image has “leaked” online claiming to show the Nintendo NX’s controller. The above picture appeared on the console’s dedicated Reddit page.
The console has not yet been officially unveiled and will almost certainly not be called NX when it launches. Details are scarce but rumours have previously suggested that it will be some kind of handheld-console hybrid. Nintendo has skipped E3 shows in recent years and has not yet announced when we can expect to see the NX’s unveiling.
As for the controller, it seems quite ugly and unergonomic. Some might argue that the Wii U’s table-like controller is a bit ungainly as well but the built-in screen justifies its size. When the PlayStation 3 was originally announced, Sony revealed a boomerang-like controller for the console before ultimately releasing the more traditionally styled Sixaxis.
This may well be a genuine image of a prototype controller for the console but if so, hopefully, Nintendo isn’t actually planning to release something that looks, and feels, like that.
According to rumours earlier this year, the Nintendo NX will work with the PlayStation 4, presumably in terms of online cross-platform play, as well as PC and mobile devices. Other rumours have suggested that the NX will consist of two devices with a unified operating system. The system is expected to launch this year between October and November, according to reports and ship 10-to-12 million units this year.
That figure may prove to be optimistic given the slow sales of the Wii U and the launch of PlayStation VR in October.
