Next Time You See Final Fantasy Versus XIII, It’ll Be Real-Time

January 18, 2012 by Josh Harmon

No more pre-rendered trailers or dev hardware. The next showing will be a live demo on consumer hardware.

While Square-Enix has been hesitant to show off Final Fantasy Versus XIII in public, we have seen a few glimpses here and there. To date, though, everything we've seen has been either prerendered or running on developer hardware.

Not anymore. According to an interview with the game's director, Tetsuya Nomura, in in the latest issue of Famitsu, the next time we see Versus XIII, the demo will be real-time, running on actual consumer hardware. Of course, at the rate we've been getting new info on the game, there's a solid chance we'll all be dead by the time that next showing rolls around. Still, something for your kids to look forward to, right?

Nomura also let a few more details on the game slip out during the interview. The game's cutscenes will be a mix of both real-time and pre-rendered, with about a 70-30 split in favor of real-time. Apparently, the decision making process comes down to whether or not adding player control would have an effect on the over all experience. For instance, the team felt that the scene where Noctis and Stella first meet didn't need to be in real time, so they converted it into a much prettier CG sequence instead.

Thanks, Andraisang.
