Project 007 Will Tell A New Origin Story For James Bond

March 16, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

IO Interactive talks about crafting a James Bond for the video game medium.

James Bond is an iconic franchise, and for ages now, we’ve seen several actors give their rendition of the iconic spy. However, it’s been a good while since we received a James Bond video game. At one point, these games thrived over the years and delivered adaptations from the movie franchise and standalone storylines featuring 007. But since 2012, we have entered a dry spell with the video game series. That will eventually change, as IO Interactive is working on Project 007.

The development team, who has hit new strides with the Hitman franchise, unveiled a while ago that they were bringing out a James Bond video game. Right now, the title is only Project 007, and details of what to expect have yet to be unveiled. Still, that didn’t stop Eurogamer from pressing the IO Interactive co-owners Christian Elverdam and Hakan Abrak to determine what Project 007 will entail. Again, don’t expect much regarding what the game will feature. But we know the studio is bringing out an origin story for the James Bond character.

Christian Elverdam noted that they were doing an origin story as they managed to gain the trust of Eon Productions. This will be the origin story of James Bond for the video game franchise, so it might not line up with any of the previously used storylines in the cinematic films. But again, since so many actors have taken on James Bond over the years, it’s not unusual to see some new slight changes in the iconic character.

We’re doing an origin [story], because one thing, to show the trust they’ve instilled in us, is that we’re allowed to build a James Bond for the games [audience], which I think is a profound homage to where our industry is and where the medium is, in the sense that yes, it’s time to have a James Bond character who was not a movie character but who’s comfortably just his own game character.

Christian Elverdam – Eurogamer

This might just be the start of a few video games if that’s the case for IO Interactive. We know that the studio is putting Hitman on the shelf for a little while, which could open up the door to delivering more James Bond video games. Of course, that depends on just how well Project 007 ends up doing in the marketplace. So while we know this is an origin story, plenty of questions remain left to be answered. Unfortunately, we’re not sure when we might get our first real look into this game, along with when players might get their hands on it.
