PS Vita Getting Netflix Support, Hopefully on Day One

January 9, 2012 by Josh Harmon

The announcement came during the company’s CES keynote, which only briefly touched on the Vita’s impending launch.

During Sony's CES keynote, Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman Kaz Hirai revealed that the company's new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, will be getting Netflix support soon after — if not at — launch.

The announcement came shortly after Hirai ran down the Vita's (questionably) successful launch and support for the Sony Entertainment Network, the company's native media suite. After noting that the PlayStation 3 was most of the most popular platforms for streaming Netflix content, Hirai announced that Vita would be getting a similar application. The Netflix team is hoping to have the app ready in team for the system's North American launch on February 22, but there was no firm promise of day one support.

Given how ubiquitous Netflix is on mobile devices these days, it's pretty safe to say that everyone saw this announcement coming, but it should prove a nice bonus for Vita's early adopters. Just don't expect to watch movies over your 3G connection, unless you've got a fetish for overage charges.
