We knew that Steam was doing very well based off recent news of user activity, but now we know just how well.
Valve announced today that Steam has more than doubled its sales numbers in 2011 compared to 2010, which "increased by more than 100 per cent for the seventh straight year". This was revealed in a statement issued by Valve.
During Christmas, more than five million users were logged on at the same time, which equates to an eighth of its entire 40 million user-base. Steam currently has more than 1,800 games available and suite of publishing tools, SteamWorks, has been integrated into more than 14.5 million games.
"Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content. Support for in-game item trading prompted the exchange of over 19 million items. Support for free-to-play games, launched in June, has spurred the launch of 18 FTP titles on Steam, with more coming in 2012. Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house." said Gabe Newell, Valve president.
Dollar signs for Valve.
