Sony Denies PlayStation VR2 Production Was Cut Down

January 31, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Sony is suggesting production is still going strong.

Earlier this morning, a report went out from Bloomberg. It was said that Sony was disappointed with the pre-order numbers for their upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. That ultimately resulted in Sony cutting down the production of the new virtual reality headset for their PlayStation 5 console platform. However, that rumor might not be true, as we’re finding a new statement from Sony on this matter. It seems production is still going strong for the upcoming VR headset, and there might not be any danger of shutting down this peripheral anytime soon.

While we reported on the Bloomberg article, it was just a report and not anything official. But that report led to plenty of outlets throwing out the rumor to their readers. Now it seems that Sony is quickly trying to get ahead of these accusations. In a statement provided to Gamesindustry.biz, the Sony PlayStation company stated that they have not cut production numbers for their upcoming VR headset. Instead, they are seeing enthusiasm for the new platform, as over thirty titles are also coming.

That number is rather important as well. While over thirty games have been announced, it’s worth pointing out that this PlayStation VR2 headset is not backward compatible with the previous PlayStation VR platform games. That could make it a big missed opportunity for some buyers who might be less excited about getting the VR peripheral if they can’t enjoy their already established PlayStation VR game collection.

Likewise, this new PlayStation VR2 is a sizeable investment. You will need the PlayStation 5 platform to start off with. But to top it off, the PlayStation VR2 will set players back $549.99. That’s just the PlayStation VR2 as well. So you’ll look at likely spending some more money to secure a few games to enjoy with the platform. As a result, that might have already caused some hesitation in picking up this VR headset. Of course, we’ll be interested in seeing how many consumers are picking this PlayStation VR2 headset when it does officially launch into the marketplace.

Players who are interested in the PlayStation VR2 won’t have too much longer of a wait. Currently, the PlayStation VR2 is set to launch on February 22, 2023. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer for the headset in the video we have embedded above.
