When players first beat Call of Duty: World at War nothing could have prepared them for what they’d experience next. A soldier regaining consciousness after his plane crash-landed. He sees a figure running towards him in the background. As the figure gets close he can hear the creature screeching in an inhuman fashion before the screen goes black. Enter Call of Duty: Zombies. Ever since Call of Duty: World at War‘s inclusion of the mode it has sparked over a decade of zombie experiences and at one point Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s Revelations DLC was the most viewed game on Twitch. Needless to say, Call of Duty: Zombies supplanted itself as a staple of the Call of Duty experience for years to come.
Unfortunately, the Zombies experience has become a background feature for recent Call of Duty titles with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty: Vanguard producing entries into the mode that failed to really capture the mode’s fanbase. While the recent entry in the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t feature the iconic mode recent job listings from Treyarch suggest that the mode is set to make a return in the next installment they produce. The studio is currently on the lookout for a new “lead zombies game designer,” a senior game designer, and two designers who are set to work exclusively on the zombies mode.
The job description for the lead zombies game designer reads: “Treyarch is looking for a lead game designer to help build, and then guide a design group to craft zombies game experiences for our ongoing and future projects” Alongside this, the post also invites applicants to “channel your passion to create the next Call of Duty zombies experiences.”
While there isn’t much to go off bar the job description this will certainly bring a sigh of relief to zombies fans as the mode still seems to be important to Activision. It’s unlikely we’ll see anything zombies related for a while as there currently doesn’t seem to be any sign that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will implement a mode to the game. Given Treyarch’s recent history with the zombies mode, it may be a good sign as it’ll give them more time to dedicate to a fully-fledged entry to the series. So, if you’re looking for new zombies content it might be best to head back to the older maps and mods for the time being.
