Gears of War has an interesting history. The formally Epic Games series initially found huge success with its original trilogy of titles and to a lesser extent Gears of War: Judgement on the Xbox 360. While later titles in the series produced by The Coalition found relative success with Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 the IP has ultimately fallen into relative obscurity in recent years. Titles like Gears Pop, which had its servers shut down on April 26th, 2021, and Gears Tactics attempted to expand the IP outside of the third-person shooter brand it’s known for to mixed success but that hasn’t stopped the series from venturing to different mediums. Netflix recently announced its intention to create a Gears of War film and animated series and now Gears of War is getting its very own card game
Steamforged Games recently announced that Gears of War: The Card Game would be released sometime later in 2023. There is no other information about the project at this time but the announcement has fans eager to find out more and some are a little confused at the announcement given it’s been nearly four years since the last mainline entry in the Gears of War series. One user commented, “This is not what I had in mind when I wanted a Gears of War game announcement in 2023.” Other commenters were optimistic about the project and are looking forward to more details making their way out. One Twitter user said “Really curious to see what you’ve been working on for the past couple of years. I’m hoping for some new artwork 👀”, while another noted that “Anything Gears of War is great news to me.”
This recent announcement following the news that Gears of War would be getting a live-action film and animated series at some point in the future has most likely been a lot of Gears fans’ dreams outside of getting a new mainline entry. After the announcement, a fan of the series on Twitter said “A Netflix live-action movie, animated series, and now a card game based on Gears of War… MAKE MY 2023, ANNOUNCE THAT FENIX COLLECTION BABY!🔥😮💨🩸⚙️”
