Hogwarts Legacy is topping the list of most wishlisted upcoming games on Steam.
This is based on data collected by SteamDB. SteamDB also tracked that the game has 256,042 followers on Valve’s platform, and is number 5 of their top sellers.
Notably, upcoming Xbox game Party Animals has more followers at 413,436 followers. That game’s listing isn’t ready for preorder and does not have a set release date. It may be the case that it would have less followers at this point if it was available to purchase by now. In either case, Hogwarts Legacy’s actual top ranking is what reflects the interest in the game.
Hogwarts Legacy will be the first game to be released by Portkey Games, which will serve to be the label for all games released in the Harry Potter franchise. Harry Potter continues to be a profitable franchise for IP owner Warner Bros, in spite of the increasing stack of controversies it has had, between the names that are attached to it, and the slipping quality of the actual products being released.
Perhaps breaking with expectations, Hogwarts Legacy is not actually set in the same timeline where Harry Potter and his friends have their adventures. Instead, the game is based on an earlier time period than when Harry or his parents were born, early in the existence of Hogwarts itself. Portkey has sold us on the upside, that players will be able to create their own characters with their own stories and adventures from the ground up.
The actual developer is Avalanche Software, a studio that has existed for over 25 years. While the company was ironically owned by Disney prior to Warner purchasing it, its actual roots come from individual staffers at Sculptured Software who had left after Sculptured was acquired by Acclaim. Most of its existence has been as an independent studio, and its big hits do include many key franchises including Mortal Kombat, the Cars racing games, and Disney Infinity.
Portkey Games have already revealed that Hogwarts Legacy has gone gold last month. Development has been progressing as planned, and expectations are if there are any last minute changes in release dates, it will still be releasing this year.
Hogwarts Legacy will release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 10, 2023. It will then be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on April 4, 2023. Finally, the Nintendo Switch version will release on July 25, 2023.
