A reboot of the anime series Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun was announced on Thursday after a countdown started on the official Twitter account. A new trailer and key visual were also revealed as part of the announcement which you can view below. The Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun anime reboot is set to release in 2023. The voices of the main characters Hanako (CV: Megumi Ogata) and Nene (CV: Akari Kito) can be heard in the new trailer.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Anime

The original run of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun started in 2020 and aired over the course of 12 episodes. The idea of the reboot is to adapt the original source material (manga) correctly and possibly even receive an upgrade in production. Studio Lerche originally animated the lone season of Hanako-kun but no news on whether or not they’ll return to handle production of the reboot has been confirmed yet.

The anime became the second most popular of the Winter 2020 season, falling just beneath Haikyuu! Season 4. The anime, despite criticism of leaving out parts from the manga, was well-received. The anime went on to win Best Character Design at the 2021 Crunchyroll Awards, Anime of the Season (Winter 2020) at the 2020 Anime Trending Awards, and even placed 4th at the 2020 Anime of the Year Awards at Anime Corner.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Manga

Written and illustrated by AidaIro, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun began serialization in Monthly GFantasy magazine in 2014. The series has since published a total of 18 volumes with the next still on the way (no release date announced). US-based publisher Yen Press acquired the English license for the series in 2017 and began releasing the manga in digital the same year. It wasn’t until 2020 that Yen Press began releasing the print version of the manga and has since published the first 16 volumes with Volume 17 set to release on February 21, 2023. The publisher also released Volume 0, which is the prequel to the series, along with an official art book.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun officially has over 7 million copies in circulation as of December 2022.

“Hanako-san, Hanako-san… are you there?” At Kamome Academy, rumors abound about the school’s Seven Mysteries, one of which is Hanako-san. Said to occupy the third stall of the third floor girls’ bathroom in the old school building, Hanako-san grants any wish when summoned. Nene Yashiro, an occult-loving high school girl who dreams of romance, ventures into this haunted bathroom… but the Hanako-san she meets there is nothing like she imagined! Kamome Academy’s Hanako-san… is a boy! (Manga synopsis via Yen Press)
