As you likely have heard by now, a Steam page for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor leaked online and gave away much information about the title. One of the most significant pieces of information was that it could release within the first few months of next year, should the date on the page be accurate. But while many were focused on that tidbit, another critical bit of information was also right on the page. Specifically, there were pre-order bonuses that you could get, and one of them was for a “blaster set.” That’s right. Cal Kestis won’t only have his lightsaber in the sequel, he has a blaster.
If you didn’t play the original game, the only weapons that then Padawan Cal Kestis had were The Force and his lightsabers. His lightsabers grew in ability over time, as did his Force powers, but he never gained weapons outside that. Yet, here, he will have a blaster. Why? As a former Jedi master once noted, they are “uncivilized.”
The answer ties into the gap between the two titles, as five years have passed, and Cal and his crew are constantly on the run from the Empire. They have seen the dangers that the Inquisitors, Darth Vader, and others have brought upon them and the galaxy. As such, openly challenging everything with a lightsaber can complicate things and draw more attention to them. They know that the Empire wants them dead, and since they destroyed the Holocron at the end of the game, they gave up on their mission to find all the Younglings and rebuild the Jedi Order with the Empire still in command of the galaxy as a whole.
The blaster might have been their way to “blend in” to the environments where they roam so that if they get into a fight, they’ll appear to be scoundrels, not Jedi.
But don’t think that because Cal has a new weapon, he won’t be able to use the old ones. The Steam Page also indicated that there would be new Force abilities and that Cal would also learn new tricks for his lightsaber. That includes having new styles to use in combat.
There are still plenty of mysteries surrounding Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, including the “man in the tube” that Cal and BD find. So the question is, when will we learn more? The Game Awards seem like a reasonable place to showcase a new trailer. If so, it’ll happen on the 8th.
