Sonic Frontiers was on gamers’ minds long before it was released last week. SEGA and Sonic Team touted the game as their “big swing” to try and push the franchise into new directions and heights. Whether it did so or not will partially depend on sales. But the other part concerns the fan and critic reactions to the title. So far, the fans love it and are playing it in good numbers in places like Steam. The critics were a bit more divisive about the title, so its future is unclear, but that will change over time.
Speaking of changes, some people have down deep into Sonic Frontiers and found some cut dialogue from Sonic that changes the tone of the title in some ways and the main plot in others. For example, some cut dialogue deals with longtime “ally” Amy Rose. Why did we put “ally” in quotation marks? Because ever since Amy Rose was brought into Sonic’s world, she felt that he was her perfect partner in the romantic sense. Between the comics and the video games, she’s done everything she can to be Sonic’s girlfriend, and he would run away every time. Literally.
Their “cat and mouse game” hasn’t deterred Amy from “chasing their dream” or helping out Sonic save the world. But many fans have seen the two as nothing more than friends, especially when Sonic sometimes wants nothing to do with Amy.
But, the dialogue from the new game may change that dynamic. In the title, Sonic’s friends are captured, including Amy, and in some of the cut dialogue, Sonic shows specific concern for Amy. For example, he wants to show her parts of the islands because “she’ll love it.” Furthermore, he says, “Amy… I should’ve made up my mind sooner.”
That would indicate that he has romantic feelings for Amy. But since they were cut from the title, this is now non-canon.
But wait, there’s more. The game also had dialogue that made it seem like Sonic was losing his memory the further he went on his journey. Perhaps this was a side story that got cut due to timing or quality reasons. It’s hard to know for sure.
Speaking of quality, Sonic Team has promised that the “global playtest” that’s going on will lead to improvements for the title going forward. Hopefully, that includes fixing the framerate issues and preventing people from getting motion sickness.
