Mass Effect 3 is a complicated title to discuss. After the beauty of Mass Effect 2, Bioware had the job of closing out their space opera trilogy in the best way possible. Given the quality of the first two titles, just about everyone felt they could do that. So, sure enough, when the game came out, it got rave reviews and sold millions. But to those who made it to the end of the game, the climax of the saga at that time ended in a way that burned many. How? Because it took away all the effort that led to the moment.
In short, Commander Shepherd and his crew rallied basically every race possible to fight the Reapers. They knew they would lose, so they made a last-ditch effort to change the war’s tide. The choice given to Shepherd was to destroy the Reapers or control them, but either decision destroyed the Mass Relays. That meant every race was trapped within that sector of space, and that sucked. While Bioware did “adjust” things via a patch, it didn’t ease the fanbase. Over time, more and more fans came out and criticized the overall ending to the game and wished things had been done differently.
Fast forward to now, and a mod team answered that wish via Project Variety. The mod is arguably one of the biggest ever done, and it’s remade Mass Effect 3 to be more in line with what happened in the previous games, restores cut dialogue, and enhances parts of the title. Here’s the description from the team themselves:
“From adding new hubs, diversifying the Citadel population, restoring cut content, and much more, Project Variety touches most of ME3 in one way or another. Project Variety is extremely customisable, with hundreds of options changeable in-game via a mod settings menu.”
That statement still only scratches the surface of what they did for this mod. They added more NPCs to the Citadel, made it so key character interactions could affect the story’s entirety, and even upgraded some of the characters’ looks.
The mod needs to be fully completed, as it’s in the testing phase. But, if you want to see how their changes impact the story and whether it improves the game, you can download it now for the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The choice, as always, is yours, Shepherd. Will you see how far this rabbit hole goes?
