343 Industries have shared plans for the release of Halo Infinite’s Forge tomorrow, on November 8, 2022. The big news here seems to be that Forge is going to be permanently joining the game moving forward.
For gamers who are unfamiliar, Forge was a special mode for user creator content that was introduced in Halo 3. Fans get to modify existing maps and make new ones. They can share those maps with friends to play on, but even further than that, they can get Halo’s developers to approve the user created maps to be added to official Halo playlists. As you can imagine, it’s a hugely popular mode since it was introduced.
343 had some trouble implementing the Forge mode to Halo Infinite. They initially announced a delay last February, with no confirmed release date at that time. On April, they announced another delay to September. Today is November, but it seems the studio is confident that the delay will be worth it.
In fact, as they explained it, tagging Forge’s release as a beta is mostly a mere formality. It has the full functionality that gamers would expect from a full release, and the main reason they are calling it a beta is they need player feedback to calibrate and complete it. There are some elements that didn’t make the November release, but overall, Forge is ready for prime time.
343 also made a small FAQ, which we will take some essential points from for your information.
Legacy maps aren’t ready quite yet, but 343 does have a timeline for their release. The Pit is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
343 did not make any promises about making it possible to add user created content that was built in outside programs like Maya or Blender into the Forge. They did promise to pay attention to community feedback to take the lead on where they should go.
They have no official announcements on adding campaign AI to Forge. They are definitely interested in implementing it. They do have Nav Mesh and AI bot support, so they already have a lead in this direction.
343 has enabled many ways of finding maps to play on. There will be a community tab to find custom content. They will also build up a recommended menu, which will feature the most popular maps, modes, and prefabs. After season 3, they will enable finding active games via custom game browser. Finally, they will integrate Forge content to matchmaking.
However, to set up Forge in matchmaking, 343 will needs the community to get started. They will have to review the maps fans create. 343 will start looking around that content, and then check if it meets 343’s requirements.
343 is hopeful that Halo Infinite players will embrace Forge. Fans are certainly also hopeful that 343 has built Forge to the level that they would make it worth using.
