After a few strange tweets began popping up on Square Enix Europe’s Twitter account, it became clear that something wasn’t quite right: A group of hackers going by the moniker #cyberwolfgang had broken into Square Enix’s account. Though Square Enix regained control within minutes, the hackers had already gained access to the Just Cause account, where they continued tweeting unprofessional and profane remarks.
During the short lived attack, the hackers blocked followers and unfollowed several accounts, in addition to mocking the security levels of Square Enix’s Twitter. Square Enix issued a statement of apology to its followers earlier today, thanking them for their patience:
“Sorry about that folks, that shouldn’t have happened. Thanks for your support and understanding over the past few hours!”
Square Enix’s professional relationship with Electronic Arts appears to be unharmed despite the unprovoked derogatory commentary on EA games, with Electronic Arts tweeting it’s nice to see Square Enix “back to normal”.
