Video games really consist of all shapes and sizes; there’s a lot of love for gigantic narrative-based games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with its whopping 53 hours of normal story, or its 173 hours for the perfectionists out there. But sometimes, all we need is a nice little, short game that we can get stuck into and complete in just a couple of days. Obsidian Entertainment’s narrative-based game Pentiment is that exact game as it looks to contain about 21 hours of gameplay.
Obsidian Entertainment’s Pentiment has been in development for some time, but the process has now finished, and the game will be released in November. And in honor of the studio completing the game, and the happiness that it will be feeling, Obsidian has decided to share some details about the upcoming game before the November 15 release date.
The length of the story has become known, and that is down to the Head of Development at Obsidian, Josh Sawyer. Sawyer tweeted about the game recently and said that he’s just completed his third walkthrough of the game, and he managed to complete it in 21 hours on the dot. You might think that to be fairly quick, and it is, but don’t forget that due to this is Sawyer’s third playthrough, which means that he knows the exact pathway to take to reach the end goal. We can safely assume that this won’t be the case for anyone looking to buy the game and that the average player will need quite a bit more time if they are to complete it.
Pentiment is a fairly unknown game to most, so let us talk you through what to expect. This game is a historical mystery, narrative-driven game that focuses on character development, heavily stylized art, and choice-driven storytelling in early 16th century Germany; a truly gothic place to explore if our former video game knowledge tells us anything. The protagonist is a highly attuned illustrator who has become caught up in a series of murders at Kiersau Abbey over a quarter of a century. The player character does possess the clever wits and stubborn will to uncover the mystery of the killers, but every decision he makes has turbulent consequences, and the nearer he comes to the answers, the closer he is to exposing a massive conspiracy.
This game is not for the faint-hearted though because it will include all sorts of terrible things, such as public executions, stylized gore, suicide, references to abortion and sexual assault, and a lot of curse words that might be too upsetting for some people out there. See, we told you, 16th century Germany was an unruly place, so you’ll need to keep your wits about you.
Pentiment is set to be released on November 15, 2022, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and OC. The game will be available to Game Pass subscribers from the very first day.
