The Rock Details “Long-Term Storytelling” To Come For Black Adam

October 24, 2022 by Todd Black

The Man In Black Has A Path To Take…

If you haven’t heard, the Black Adam movie was a hit with audiences and soared to the No.1 spot at the global box office. In addition, it had an impressive financial debut, and many hope a sequel is in the works. The reason for that hope isn’t just the quality of the movie, which is the highest-rated DC Comics film by the audience since The Dark Knight, but the post-credits sequence that set the internet on fire. If you haven’t watched the movie and have avoided leaks so far, you’ll need to skip this next part that we’ll talk about. Seriously, we’re warning you, spoilers ahead!

Still here? Good. At the end of the main film, Teth Adam takes his place on the throne of Kahndaq, then destroys it. He proclaimed himself the protector of the nation, nothing more. Adam even put the Justice Society on notice by stating that he would defend it against anything he deems a threat. In the post-credits sequence, Amanda Waller arrived via drone hologram to warn Adam that if he took a step out of Kahndaq, she’d put him down. He wasn’t afraid of this, of course, as he was the “strongest being on the planet.” Amanda Waller noted she could “call in a favor” for someone not from the planet to take him out.

“Send them all,” he challenges. She accepts the challenge, and Superman shows up. Not in the way he did in the Shazam movie, but we saw Henry Cavill in full. If you recall the press lead-up to the film, The Rock mentioned Cavill and Superman multiple times and stated there needed to be a clash between the two. At the world premiere event, The Rock was asked by journalist Brandon Davis whether a sequel would be about Black Adam vs. Superman. He was non-committal at the time. But he then made a tweet that said:

“As always, great chopping up the #Superman vs #BlackAdam with my guy@BrandonDavisBD. That’s definitely not the next step. We have a lot more long-term storytelling to do before that historic DCEU showdown and more new characters to establish. Enjoy the movie #BlackAdam!!”

So as you can see, while the post-credits sequence teased the matchup, it might not happen in the sequel. There are multiple reasons for this likely not to happen next. First, as the post-credits sequence teased, Cavill’s Superman didn’t come to fight; he came to talk. Second, most people want to see Black Adam go up against Shazam, especially since the “other champion” has his second movie coming out next year. Their clash is inevitable due to their shared history, so it makes sense that they’d fight first.

Finally, Cavill hasn’t been in a leading role in some time in the DCEU due to behind-the-scenes drama. As a result, many want him to do Man of Steel 2 first before doing other films.

No matter the path it takes, it’ll be awesome when the clash between these two beings happens.
