Skull and Bones is a game we’ve been waiting for. It’s been a long time coming, and while the development processes seemingly had its own choppy waters to navigate, the game’s release is nearing. If you’re unfamiliar with Skull and Bones, the game started development all the way back in 2013. However, Ubisoft didn’t officially unveil this game to the masses until the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017. Fans that tuned into E3 that year for the Ubisoft press media conference were treated to the reveal of a brand new pirates-themed game.
This initial reveal offered insight into more ship combat as players would sail to the open seas fighting off other pirates and the law. However, since that grand unveiling, Skull and Bones have endured several years of silence. Despite Ubisoft not officially confirming the game production had been canceled, things were not looking very bright for Skull and Bones. Although, we finally got a bit of light at the end of the tunnel in 2020. In 2020 Ubisoft confirmed that the development was pressing on.
Then in 2022, we received a new showcasing. Once again, players were shown traversing the open waters and battling other pirates in search of treasure. We were also given a new release date to mark on our calendars. If you want a more pirate-themed game to dive into, then Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones might be a viable option to run with soon.
What’s The Premise In Skull and Bones?
In this game, we’re dealing with the golden age of piracy. Here you’re stepping into the boots of an outcast. If you are looking to make a name for yourself and also some loot along the way, piracy is your new career path. But, being a newcomer to this ruthless, cutthroat world of plundering for treasure might be a grind. You’ll start off with a small ship and must work to build up your crew, resources, and the vessel you’ll take out in the open seas.
As mentioned, Skull and Bones is set during the golden age of piracy and as a result, expect quite the competition out in the open world. We know that we’re also dealing with an area inspired by the Indian Ocean. Therefore, you’ll find tropical locations all around. However, there doesn’t appear to be too much exploration available when on foot. In fact, it looks like this game is mainly based around ships, but you will be able to port and make different upgrades. There’s also some focus on multiplayer gameplay, so this might be a title you’ll want to enjoy with friends.
We’re still waiting to see just what missions might pop up. But, as you progress through the game, new resources, ships, and reputation will build for your character. As a result, you’ll eventually become a force to reckon with when plundering for new treasure. With all that said, this is a business that will have you fighting off competitive pirate crews and the law that seeks to end the piracy trade altogether. Currently, Skull and Bones is slated to launch on March 9, 2023. When this title does hit the marketplace, you can expect it on the PC, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X/S platforms.
