It’s not great news for Square Enix and PlatinumGames’ disastrous action RPG Babylon’s Fall. The game has now found its way into bargain bins in stores across the country, but it looks as though the PS5 and PS4 title has just reached genuine flop status.
As reported in VGC and first noticed by videogamedeals over on Twitter, copies of Babylon’s Fall are now being viewed as a giveaway item at some GameStop stores. The game is being removed from GameStop stock across the board, with some customers reporting that they’ve been given physical copies of it for free by GameStop employees. It comes to something when a game is so bad that stores are literally giving it away. However, given recent announcements about the state of the game’s future, it’s hardly surprising that this has happened.
Square Enix drove the final nail into the coffin of Babylon’s Fall just last week, after announcing that the live-service action game would have its service terminated on February 27 next year. The game was only launched in March of this year, but it’s been a catalog of errors pretty much from the get-go, and it seems that Square Enix and PlatinumGames have decided that the best move is to simply cut their losses and shut down the game entirely.
With this in mind, it’s no wonder that stores are keen to get rid of the troubled title. Those picking up a free copy will have what’s left of this year up until the end of February 2023 to dive into the ambitious high-fantasy mythical world that ultimately, flew too close to the sun and burned itself to a playerless crisp.
Back when it launched, Babylon’s Fall was intended as an engaging co-op action RPG, however, it was not well received at all by either critics or the community. The game has only managed to score a meager user rating of 2.2 on the review aggregator site Metacritic, placing it as the second worst PS5 game of this year so far. Yikes. Despite Square Enix and PlatinumGames’ efforts to rectify things with a second season of content, things simply haven’t been able to recover, with many users citing the “monotonous” feel of the gameplay and combat as one of the reasons the death knell has sounded over Babylon’s Fall.
As well as giving out copies of the title for free, other customers have reported that trying to get a free copy led to the discovery of some wanton destruction. According to VGC, one user on Twitter was unable to get a free copy as staff at GameStop stores were simply trashing them at this point. It’s a somewhat sad way to see a game meet its end, but hopefully, there’ll be lessons learned from the rather epic fall of Babylon’s Fall.
