Activision and many critics claimed that it was the most anticipated video game in history and it seems like they weren't kidding; Modern Warfare 3 sold more than 6.5 million units in the US and UK within its first 24 hours of availability. Yep, these staggering numbers are from two regions only.
Activision has released the sale numbers for the first 24 hours of its latest game, stating that it has generated more than $400 million dollars US and UK alone, shattering its own day-one sales record previously held by Black Ops, which sold $360 million. Back in 2009, Modern Warfare 2 sold $310 million also setting the record for "biggest entertainment launch ever."
"Call of Duty is more than a game. It's become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere. I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you." states Eric Hirshberg , CEO, Activision Publishing.
In comparison to the film industry, the Call of Duty franchise has exceeded worldwide theatrical box office for two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings".
Not surprisingly, Activision has already stated that another Call of Duty game is planned to be released late next year.
