Metal Hellsinger Launches Today on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC

September 15, 2022 by Ryan Parreno

Whichever platform you choose, you’re certain to have a hell of a time.

Metal Hellsinger is now available to play on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

The game is the first project from new Swedish game Studio The Outsiders, founded by veterans David Goldfarb and Benjamin Cousins. Both worked together in EA’s DICE studio on the Battlefield franchise. Goldfarb was particularly known as the lead designer of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. He later became game director for Payday 2 under Overkill Software. The Outsiders is owned by Funcom, the Norwegian game company best known for MMOs like Age of Conan and Anarchy Online.

However, Metal Hellsinger is no MMO, and in spite of its looks, it isn’t just another Doom clone. Metal Hellsinger is a rhythm-based FPS, creating an entirely new genre. While you do move around a fully 3D world like modern-day Doom, there is also a special screen indicator that doubles as your crosshairs to indicate if you’re in sync with the rhythm. The idea is the closer you can match the rhythm while shooting, the more damage you will deal out, and also the louder and more metal the soundtrack will get.

In the game scenario, you play a part human, part demon creature called The Unknown. You make your way through the different levels of hell for the final showdown with The Red Judge.

Your weapons can vary from a spinning boomerang-like blade or a multitude of guns. Whichever weapon you pick, each one has its own unique ability.

The game’s main story campaign is narrated by Troy Baker. There is also a special challenge mode, where you can beat special challenges to hit the leaderboards.

As you can imagine, the music is a major part of this game, and on this end, Funcom and The Outsiders did not disappoint. Here is the list of artists that Funcom got to perform on the Metal Hellsinger soundtrack.

  • Mikael Stanne, from Dark Tranquility
  • Tatiana Shmayluk, from Jinjer
  • Bjorn Strid, from Soilwork
  • Matt Heafy, from Trivium
  • Serj Tankian, from System of a Down
  • Dennis Lynxzen, from the bands Refused and IVSN
  • Randy Blythe, from Lamb of God
  • Alissa White-Gluz, from Arch Enemy
  • James Dorton, from Black Crown Initiate

Although these musicians are all signed to major record labels, Funcom and The Outsiders made arrangements so that all these songs are fully owned by Funcom. Funcom has pledged that they will ensure content creators get minimal or no copyright strikes because of this arrangement.

Xbox Gamepass subscribers get a special treat, as it is also coming as part of Gamepass today. They can play the game on their Xbox Series X or S console, download and play it on a Windows device, or stream it on any phone or tablet.

Metal Hellsinger is also playable on Steam Deck and any Steam OS device.

And of course, PlayStation 5 owners can stream Metal Hellsinger on any iPhone or Android device with the PS Remote Play app, possibly with the BackBone One. Whichever platform you choose, you’re certain to have a hell of a time.
