A sequel to the beloved Nintendo Switch title, Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler II has been announced. The game will be coming to Nintendo Switch on February 24, 2022, a date which we learned later in the showcase is going to be incredibly stacked with JRPGs as well as several other titles, all coming to the platform. An interesting thing though that has been revealed since the game was initially revealed is that the game will also be coming to PlayStation platforms – while this is not typically an unusual occurrence for a JRPG, it’s all the more interesting in the case of Octopath Traveler II, because the original game launched as a Switch exclusive, migrated to PC, and then Xbox One via Gamepass, but never launched on PlayStation consoles. Unless something is announced soon, it seems that PlayStation players may be jumping into Octopath Traveler II without having played the original game
The debut trailer (shown below) highlights much of what the world loved about the original game, eight characters of wildly different, but still converging and divergent stories. The game’s website has launched and also revealed that the original game has gone on to sell more than three million units so far, a fantastic accomplishment for a new IP leveraging old-school qualities and visual styles, despite the modernized spin they’ve received.
The Octopath Traveler II website has a little to say about the coming game
A completely new RPG in the Octopath Traveler series, which was released in 2018 and has shipped over 3 million copies worldwide and has been downloaded. “HD-2D” graphics that fuse pixel art and 3DCG have evolved further and appeared. In a new land called “Solistia”, a new journey of eight people begins in a new era.
Where will you go, what will you do,
and which story will you be the hero of?
Everything is up to you.
Let’s go on a journey, to your own story─
Several new characters were revealed in the trailer “The Warrior” Hikari, journeying home, “The Dancer” Agnea, journeying for stardom, “The Merchant” Partitio, journeying for prosperity, “The Scholar” Osyald, journeying for revenge, “The Thief” Throne, journeying for freedom, “The Cleric” Temenos, journeying for truth, “The Hunter” Ochette, journeying for legends and “The Apothecary” Castti who journeying for memories. How these characters lives come together will be one of the great fascinating elements of the game, just as it was in the original release in 2018.
