When it comes to the Saints Row franchise, the games have always leaned on the side of insanity versus grittiness. Yes, the titles did begin as a GTA knockoff, but as time went on, the team at Volition realized that they had something more special on their hands. By the third title, they cranked up the insanity to the absolute limit–and got a GOTY nominee as a result. With their 4th title, they went even crazier via superpowers and alien invaders. So when the reboot was announced, people were curious about how far the madness would go.
A new gameplay overview trailer has arrived and it showcases that the craziness of it all is still there. We’re starting all over again with a new crew of Saints, and that means you’ll have to build everything up from scratch in the most insane way possible.
As the narrator happily tells you, you are a former “Marshall” who is now a gun for hire that becomes part of a group that will be known as the Saints. While it sounds easy to make a criminal organization, it’s not, and you’ll have to do it all in the American Southwest via the city of Santo Ileso.
It’s a place with a lot of potential for you to grow, but also plenty of threats. These include the aforementioned Marshalls, The Idols, hitmen, and more. You’ll start small at the beginning, making your name by doing jobs for others and getting the revenue to start your expansion. This includes getting your own base on 3rd Street. Naturally.
As you get your feet wet, you’ll start trying to take over the city block by block, one activity at a time. This could be anything from taking out the competition to flying all over the city in a skysuit, defending territory, and so on. You’ll get to use a wide variety of weapons and gear to make sure your opposition goes away. You can also snag some weapons that truly break the laws of reality.
And what’s a Saint without a ride? Once again, you’ll be able to drive cars that you can customize to an OP level and ensure that when you’re on the road, no one will want to mess with you. Yes, you can customize your “Boss” so that they look…like a boss.
All in all, Saints Row looks like it’s going to honor the franchise well, all the while giving you some new homies to have fun with, new bad guys to take down, and a new empire to call your own. The game comes out on August 23.
