It seems as though the wheels could be falling off Ubisoft’s Roller Champions already. According to a source in contact with games journalist Jeff Grubb, the free-to-play 3v3 multiplayer roller derby game is on the verge of being scrapped only a few months since its official release.
Grubb revealed his insider information on the Xbox Era podcast over the weekend, explaining that Roller Champions is in trouble. “Roller Champions is going to be cancelled after Season 3,” Grubb revealed when reading a message from his source on the podcast. It was also noted during the podcast that the game has only just been released in full, which would mean that the years of development work that have so far gone into Roller Champions would have been potentially for little to no reward if the game is to be scrapped after such a short window of time.
However, Ubisoft itself is yet to comment on these rumours, so as always, it’s important to take comments from insiders with a pinch of salt. With that said, the skating game doesn’t seem to be hitting the spot with players, with Exputer recently noting a huge downturn in the game’s Twitch viewership only a month after its release.
In contrast, however, Ubisoft has made positive mention of the game during its recent first quarter sales report, stating that “Roller Champions has been well received by players for its fun and dynamic gameplay. On both retention and revenues KPIs, Roller Champions is tracking ahead of Hyper Scape.”
Whether this new information gathered by Grubb turns out to be accurate, we’ll just have to wait and see. Roller Champions has had a number of post-launch content updates already, so it may be that Ubisoft isn’t quite ready to call time on its roller-skating action game just yet. Ultimately, it’ll all boil down to the game’s popularity and the strength of its community, so it may be worth waiting a little longer to see if it can bounce back.
