Warhammer Online Not Dead, Has Future Ahead

October 12, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Far from dead, Warhammer Online may yet have a future ahead of it.

Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is safe from having its toe tagged—at least from now. Despite a dipping base of subscribers, its developers say they have no plans to make the game free-to-play like so many other MMORPGs. Far from being sent to lie on a cold metal slab, BioWare Mythic may have plans to keep the game alive with the addition of future content.

When asked if the game would be shut down for the launch and focus of SWTOR, Eugene Evans of BioWare Mythic flatly denied the suggestion.

“No, no,” he said. “All of these games appeal to different people for different reasons. I’m very proud to be able to say that I’m running the studio that’s run Ultima Online for as long as it has—14 years. Dark Age of Camelot just celebrated 10 years. We hope we can run these games for as long as there is player interest.”

Evans further explained that the studio is currently focused on Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes, a DOTA-style spinoff of the Warhammer Online game. “We believe in the community of players who are playing Age of Reckoning,” said Evans. “Yes, we could have attracted a lot of players to it [with free-to-play], but it’s unclear how long you’ll keep them. We wanted to support our game as it currently exists.”

“We’re really starting almost from the ground-up but having the benefit of being able to draw on everything we’ve learned from producing Warhammer Online,” he said.
