Several fans with insider sources claim they have five sources backing this rumor. This Paper Mario Wii U game is being developed by Intelligent Systems, and is apparently in the process of being localized and tested.
If true, it will be the first new Wii U title from Nintendo to be revealed for 2016. With all the speculation on the pending release of the Nintendo NX, many fans were not even expecting a new Wii U title to be revealed.
While the last standalone Paper Mario title, Paper Mario Sticker Star, did not sell too well, it is possible Nintendo bet on fans looking for the first console Paper Mario game in years. That last title happens to be Super Paper Mario, released for the Wii in 2007. Of course, it’s more likely to be successful than a new Battalion Wars title, also an Intelligent Systems staple.
All things considered, it’s credible that Nintendo would continue to make Mario games for Wii U. If they’re holding back more niche IPs, such as Metroid, for the Wii U’s successor, they would have to rely on more reliable IPs, like Mario, to keep the flow of games on Wii U going.
Nintendo has yet to confirm the existence of a new Paper Mario game for Wii U.
