Matthew Inman, founder of the online web comic The Oatmeal, partnered with Elan Lee and Shane small last year to create a tabletop card game called Exploding Kittens. It went on to become the most-funded game in Kickstarter history, raking in $8.8 million from more than 200,000 backers (via Mashable).
The game is now digitally available for iOS, with an Android version coming “soon.” The game costs $1.99 on the app store, with additional in-game purchases. Thanks to a launch special, all of these in-game purchases are free for a limited time. The game’s app store page describes it as a version of Russian Roulette, but with, well, exploding kittens.
“In this highly-strategic, kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game — unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.”
The game is full of the trademark strange artistic style The Oatmeal is known for, along with its equally delightful sense of humor. Games can support up to six players, although an internet connection isn’t required. Devices can link up via an ad hoc connection.
