To recap, this does not represent the total cost of making Psychonauts 2. Double Fine has openly stated they need $ 10 to 13.5 million, and so they are splitting up the cost of making the game between themselves, Fig investors, and an as of yet unnamed external partner. Considering the game is slated for multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and DRM-free PC, it’s unlikely the partner is Sony, who worked with them on other remakes, or Microsoft.
As for the story, Raz gets his dream fulfilled and visits Psychonauts HQ. However, he soon learns it's not what he thought it would be, and that they need him more than he needs them.
Perhaps crowdfunding was Double Fine’s own way of avoiding repeating the situation with Grim Fandango Remastered. They partnered with Sony for this project, and subsequently Xbox fans missed out on getting the game for their Xbox Ones.
Fig has received a lot of skepticism since it was launched, but now that Double Fine has managed to fund Psychonauts 2, they now have an opportunity to prove its worth.
Psychonauts 2 is projected to release in 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, on Windows, Mac, and Linux. What are your expectations for this project? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
