Did you know that it’s Sonic’s 25th anniversary? You may be hearing this from Sega themselves soon, in a big way.
Johnny Gioeli, vocalist of band Crush 40, let slip that they may be working on a Sonic anniversary game. In a now deleted Facebook post, Gioeli shared this answer to a question about their next album:
When will there be news about the Crush 40 album?
~We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic. We “might” participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game…stay tuned…
That may have been deleted, but an official Sonic Twitter account has already shared a 25th anniversary logo for Sonic.

While the original Sonic The Hedgehog game doesn’t hold up compared to its sequel, it remains a historically significant video game. It heralded Sega’s challenge to Nintendo’s dominance, setting the stage for the first round of console wars, as well as the era of mascot platformers.
In spite of our biggest hopes, it’s not clear as of yet what this 25th anniversary Sonic game would be. Hopefully, it isn’t just a rebrand for Mario and Sonic at the Olympics 2016 or Sonic Rush. Of course, Sega has also failed to revive Sonic in 2D and 3D games alike (Sonic 4 Episode 1 and 2, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom).
