HTC Announces 2nd Generation Virtual Reality System, The Vive Pre

January 5, 2016 by Carlos Chism

Both the headset and controllers have received a complete overhaul.

HTC has unveiled the latest update to its Vive virtual reality headset, the Vive Pre. Dubbed a “Virtual Reality System,” the headset is paired with overhauled controllers and a front-facing camera.

HTC detailed the updates and changes to the device in its press release (as spotted by IGN):

“A newly developed front facing camera allows you to do more both inside and outside your Virtual world by blending physical elements into the virtual space. Being able to take a seat, find your drink, and carry on conversations without removing your headset is only the beginning of what's possible.”

The system also features redesigned controllers, which have “enhanced ergonomics and softer edges, greater balance, new textured buttons, and grip pads for a more comfortable feel in the hand.” These also come with a dual stage trigger, which provides haptic feedback. These controllers will be powered by integrated rechargeable batteries, and HTC claims they will last 4 hours on a single charge.

The post also mentions how HTC and Valve are working together on the project. The Vive Pre is the first VR hardware that will support Steam VR, which is Valve’s tracking and chaperone system. Both companies are also working with “thousands of developers and partners across a wide spectrum of sectors,” including the health, automotive, and education industries.

This news comes just a day after Oculus announced the Rift will be available for preorder tomorrow. We also learned the PC requirements for running the Rift. Let’s hope the Vive Pre doesn’t require even beefier hardware.
