As announced at PSX 2015, Naughty Dog's upcoming action-adventure game Uncharted 4 will feature branching dialog options. The game's new feature was showcased in a cutscene in which Nathan had some dialog options while talking to his brother Sam. Until now, we didn't know the extent of the dialog system and its impact on the story.
In an interview with Greg Miller, the game's lead Neil Druckmann elaborated on the system.
“There were a few spots in the game where we felt dialogue options would give us something interesting,” he said. “So with Sam talking to Nate about his adventures, we thought this was cool nod to the fans. Where would Nate start the story? Let’s give fans the option so they can start the story wherever they want.”
Druckmann didn't specify where the dialog choices would show up or how often players would have the option to choose what to say, however.
The developer joked that it was probably a bad decision on Naughty Dog's part to make Uncharted 4 the last title in the series, given its popularity and success, but that he and the rest of the team felt it was time to wrap the story up.
“These characters are real to us,” he said. “When we’re writing for them you can hear their voices in your head. But it felt it was time to wrap it up. We felt like we really came up with something that looks at the three previous games as the start of an arc and this is the finish.”
Uncharted 4 comoes out on March 18. It's exclusive to the PS4.
