In the Frequently Asked Questions section on their Psychonauts 2 crowdfunding page, studio Double Fine has indicated that they would be willing to start development on a Brutal Legend sequel, if their latest crowdfunding/crowd equity venture is a success. As spotted by VideoGamer, The company’s full answer reads: “We’ve always said that we wanted to make sequels to both Psychonauts and Brutal Legend,” the company said, “We can’t make any promises, but if Psychonauts [2] is a success for us, then perhaps Brutal Legend 2 will be more possible?”
Double Fine announced Psychonauts 2 last Thursday night at The Game Awards, while simultaneously launching the game’s Fig crowdfunding page. Instead of a traditional crowdfunded kickstarter, Fig allows equity investments into the project, in addition to traditional rewards-based funding. The company’s goal is $3.3 million, and has raised 57% of its funds ($1.89 million) in only four days, with 36 left to go. It should be noted that Tim Schafer, President and CEO of Double Find Productions, is part of the Fig Advisory studios team.
It reportedly cost Electronic Arts $25 million when it funded Brutal Legend, which was released in 2009. This is several times the amount that Double Fine is asking for with Psychonauts 2. It appears that it would cost as much or more to fund a sequel at this point in time.
Psychonauts 2 does not currently have a release date. According to its Fig page, the game is currently in pre-production. Backer rewards delivery notes indicate that Double Fine doesn't expect to ship the game until roughly Fall 2018.
