Microsoft and Bethesda have unveiled the long-awaited first gameplay footage for the space epic Starfield. Todd Howard took to the stage at the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase to give an expansive look at the game, revealing gunplay, character customization, ship and habitat building, and planetary exploration. There’s truly a massive amount of information.
Check out the full 15-minute reveal below.
Starfield looks to be by far the biggest game that Todd Howard and Bethesda have ever made. Players will be able to take off and land their ships from anywhere on a celestial body’s surface. Players will also be able to completely design their ships from scratch with what looks to be an incredibly in-depth ship-building system. Further, players will be able to set up bases on planets and moons, building the whole habitats to their own design and staffing them with NPCs.
While in space, there’s ship-to-ship combat with players having full control over the flight and combat mechanics. Howard also unveiled the phenomenal scale of Starfield. In the video, he promised over 100 systems with over 1000 planets will be open for exploration by players.
Howard stopped short of announcing the new release date for Starfield. The game was originally supposed to launch later this year on November 11. Bethesda announced that it had to delay the game last month. At the time, Bethesda announced that Starfield would be released in “the first half of 2023.” That tracks with Microsoft’s promise that today’s showcase would only be featuring games that will release within the next 12 months.
Stay tuned for more Starfield info as we get closer to 2023. Bethesda is no doubt hesitant to commit to a new release date until it is certain the game won’t need to be delayed again.
