Super Mario Maker Update Goes Live, With Some Surprise Guests

November 5, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Whether you wanted three elves stacked on top of each other to make one big elf, or a middle aged Japanese salaryman, Nintendo has your back.

The first Super Mario Maker update promised at the end of October has come live, and there are a few surprises that came with the checkpoint system and contextual powerups.

So, here are the first batch of Makers and Event Courses:

Event Courses – some include unlockable Mystery Mushroom items

  • Tri Force Heroes
  • Arino Maker
  • Arino Maker Returns
  • New! Arino Maker
  • Super Bakarhythm Land
  • Ship Love

Official Maker listings – some containing multiple levels

  • Mashiko
  • Yamamura
  • Undodog
  • Bowser
  • Coursebot
  • Mr. Eraser
  • Budgie
  • Soundfrog

If you are a huge Nintendo fan, you may have already seen it. Yes, one Event Course is themed for the Tri Force Heroes. If you beat that course, you earn the Triforce Heroes costume, and Nintendo squeezed in all three colored Links. How? By making them a Triforce Totem, of course.

The other courses feature no less than the most venerable gaming personality you never heard of, Arino Kaicho, AKA Chief Shinya Arino, of Japanese longplay TV show Game Center CX. Nintendo games have long been associated with Arino and Game Center CX, but given only the most ardent retro gamers know him outside Japan, this really is a pleasant surprise. In keeping with Arino’s feckless style, most of his Event Courses run with the gimmick of giving you a star at the start and compelling you to make a mad dash for the exit. Finishing any of these courses will get you the Arino costume, which you will hopefully enjoy even if you don’t know this middle aged comedian at all.

Finally, the patch fixed some exploits some speedrunners were taking advantage of to game the game maker. You can read more about them here.
