Microsoft will be using an emulator to provide this backwards compatibility, which provides advantages and disadvantages compared to the traditional approach of using the prior console’s hardware in the newer machine, as Nintendo has done for the Wii U. While they will not be able to make all titles backwards compatible, Microsoft is adding features like carrying over achievements and gamerscores. There are also some limited graphic enhancements, such as v-sync, as described here.
