When Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said he wanted to be in superhero movies, no one doubted he’d be the right pick. He already had the look and the star power to pull off a major hero film. The only question was: which one? The answer shocked fans as he was announced in the role of Black Adam, the villain/anti-hero of the DC Comics universe and rival to Shazam.
It took years to get things rolling, but once it started, it didn’t stop. With the first trailer now out, many are wondering how far The Rock is going to take this. His answer? As far as they’ll let him.
“I am 100% committed to not only Black Adam but then expanding the Black Adam universe, the DC universe,” Johnson said in an interview after the trailer’s debut. “I am an optimist from the word, ‘Go.’ So, to me and to all of us up here, all universes exist in our heads. I will, we all will, work very hard to make sure we are honoring the mythology but also giving the fans what they want. I hear the fans, we all do, and I pick up everything they’re putting down. It doesn’t get by me, it doesn’t get by these guys [producer Hiram Garcia, producer Beau Flynn, director Jaume Collet-Serra]. This is the beginning, hopefully, fingers crossed, of a very long storytelling road that Black Adam is the anchoring jet fuel now that will then push and press this universe out.”
While that might sound odd, Black Adam himself does have a lot of story and lore to build upon, including a clash with Shazam that at this point seems pretty inevitable–as so long as the movie (and the second Shazam movie) is well-received.
The Rock is committed, and it’s not wise to get in the way of said commitments.
