The Xenoblade Chronicles franchise is more fascinating than you might expect. The original title came out on the Wii in Japan, but audiences in the West quickly wanted to play it as well. These eager fans started “Operation Rainfall” to make it happen…and it worked. Following this, on the Wii U, we got Xenoblade Chronicles X, a game that took a different direction for the series but was still beloved by those who played it. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 came out in the legendary first year of the Nintendo Switch and sold incredibly well. This means that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is feeling the pressure to match what has come before.
Why the stress? Each of the prior games saw high sales, and the original game even got a Definitive Edition to help showcase what the game was meant to be on the Wii. What’s more, the original title and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 were tied together in an overarching way, and the Definitive Edition had an epilogue that was meant to be a prequel to what would come in future games.
Fans are going to want to enjoy more of what they enjoyed before with the previous titles. Thankfully, we can say with certainty that at least one aspect of that beloved gameplay will be returning in the third installment. As a new teaser trailer shows, the vast world of Aionios has plenty to offer to both new and returning Xenoblade players.
All three previous games prided themselves on giving players a number of different places to explore in a way that felt natural. First impressions of Aionios seem to imply that this will be the case again in the third installment.
We’ll find out in full when Xenoblade Chronicles 3 arrives on Nintendo Switch on July 29th.
