Final Fantasy XVI just got a new trailer, and yes, it features gameplay. Debuted during today’s Sony State of Play, the trailer for Square Enix’s much-anticipated new title shows off action RPG combat, as well as a star-studded cast of summon favorites, including Shiva, Bahamut, Ramuh, and Titan.
The new trailer, dubbed “Dominance,” hints at war brewing in the land of Valisthea. Individuals called Dominants are able to channel the power of Eikons, this game’s name for summons. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Final Fantasy XVI director Hiroshi Takai confirmed that the game has entered the final stage of development, and the team “is focusing on polish as they continue their march toward master up and launch.” Takai promises that the title will feature “high-octane battles” starring the game’s protagonist, a Dominant named Clive Rosfield.
Final Fantasy XVI was first announced in Sony’s PlayStation 5 showcase event back in 2020. Since then, Square Enix has been tight-lipped regarding new information for the upcoming title, other than to announce in December 2021 that the game was being delayed. However, thanks to today’s State of Play, Final Fantasy fans have both a gameplay-filled trailer and a release date.
Final Fantasy XVI launches on PS5 in Summer 2023.
