An early Splatoon hack of what appears to be upcoming content is now having dire consequences for players. If you’re a regular player, read up because your save data may be at stake.
The hack causing this issue is somewhat of a spoiler; dataminers found out an Octoling will be made available in the game, and hackers found a way to use the skin today.
Unfortunately, because this is a hack, Inkopolis Plaza still is not coded to handle the Octolings coming in. If an Octoling enters your Plaza after a game, your game will crash when it tries to load. Even the title screen is affected, and the only way out is to wait for a Splatfest to clear the Plaza.
Until Nintendo releases a patch, players have to be proactive and make sure hacked Octolings don’t enter their Plaza. To guarantee this, you have to stay in the lobby until the Octoling player leaves, and then play another match without them.
It’s perhaps a fitting state of affairs, considering the Octolings are supposed to be enemies of the Splatlings anyway, but Nintendo’s bug fix – and the actual confirmation and release of playable Octolings – can’t come soon enough. They actually teased it anyway. Maybe this week’s Splatfest is a good a time to introduce them as any.
