Amazon Game Studios is currently developing a new, “melee-oriented” PC game and it has hired former Guild Wars 2 lead designer Eric Flannum to lead the charge.
The news was confirmed on Flannum’s LinkedIn profile, which he has updated to reflect his new position at Amazon Game Studios. Flannum also posted a call-for-hire on LinkedIn, where he described the new project he is working on.
“We’re currently building awesome teams with the aim of radically evolving gameplay using Twitch, the Amazon Web Services cloud, and technical innovation,” wrote Flannum. “We believe games can be a driving force in uniting people and driving technical and artistic innovation. Games will produce some of the future’s most influential voices in design, engineering, and art and at Amazon we want to be a major part of that.”
He went on to describe the game as an “ambitious, new PC game, utilizing the latest technology to explore third person, competitive, melee-oriented action gameplay in an entirely new light.”
The studio is hiring for 12 different positions, but it already has talent that worked on Guild Wars, Forza, Halo, Starcraft, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Dota, Infamous, Sunset Overdrive, Destiny, and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
Flannum left ArenaNet, where he worked for more than 10 years, to join Amazon Game Studios earlier this month. He was the lead designer on Guild Wars 2, which recently saw its base game become free for all to play due to its first expansion, Heart of Thorns, releasing in October.
