Bethesda has posted a video of Fallout composer Inon Zur playing the theme music for Fallout 4 on a piano. You can view the video below.
Zur is known for his musical work on the Fallout series, starting with Fallout Tactics. Zur says that much of his work on the Fallout series has been creating atmospheric soundscapes to envelop players in the in-game environments.
“In this way we provide a different musical experience that is not necessarily very thematic but is something very memorable,” Zur said in an interview with Bethesda’s global content lead Gary Steinman.
It is Zur’s belief that Fallout 4, more than any other game in the series, tells a more personal story, which is why the game’s music will make ample use of a piano. However, creative director Todd Howard wasn’t so keen on using the piano after hearing Zur’s first rendition of Fallout 4’s theme.
“So I created a combination between a real piano and an electric piano sound,” Zur said. “A sound that is really round and not bright at all but very lush.”
Howard and audio director Mark Lampert approved of the revised theme and from that point on, Zur made a conscious effort to include the sound of a piano throughout the game.
Be sure to check out the full interview on Bethesda’s website. There are some interesting insights into how music plays its own role in the world of Fallout.
Yesterday, Bethesda also took us behind the scenes of Fallout 4’s development by introducing us to Dogmeat’s real-life counterpart, River.
