The little blue hedgehog has taken the year by storm with games, upcoming tv shows, and a second film landing recently, and then there is the upcoming game Sonic Frontiers that is expected to land towards the end of the year. Sega has already said that they are expecting high review scores for Sonic Frontiers, but how would they know that when the game won’t be released for months? Sonic Frontiers will be available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC, and will be Sega’s most ambitious Sonic title for quite some time.
The CEO of Sega Sammy, Haruki Satomi, spoke about the qualities of the game in a recent Q&A session, and what kind of target scores they would be looking at. Satomi said, “We have set internal targets, as the correlation between the scores of external evaluation organizations and sales is high in Europe and North America.” He went on to add that “If the game gets a high score, it can become a must-buy game, and possibly generate synergy with sales, so we are currently working hard to improve the quality of the game toward its sales for the holiday season.”
The head of the Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, said that he would love Frontiers to have the same impact that Sonic Adventure had on the gaming world all those years ago – it’s got a lot to live up to if it’s to replicate that famous title. In another recent interview, Iizuka spoke about this in more detail, “Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way, I really hope that this new title that is releasing at the end of the year, can lay down the foundations for following Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.”
The recent success of the Sonic film will no doubt have a major say in how well this game is received – and say what you want about the film series, but when it comes to video games, this little blue hedgehog very rarely misses the spot. So, make sure you keep an eye out for the game when it gets released in the holidays.
